Activity 1 - Surface Chemical Make-up

What is the chemicals and their structures that make up cardboard?
- Cardboard is a stiff and thicker version of paper. A molecule that makes up paper is Cellulose.

What is the chemicals and their structures that make up Styrofoam?
- Styrofoam is form of Polystyrene. Polystyrene is made up of monomer styrene and hydrocarbon that is commercially manufactured by petroleum from chemical factories. This is the most widely used plastic. Hydrogen, Carbon and Oxygen are atoms commonly used.

What is the chemicals and their structures that make up waxes?
- Wax usually has a mixture of fatty acids and carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen compounds. Triglycerides.

Explain why water is attracted to cardboard and not Styrofoam.
- the electronegativity does not attract as well between Styrofoam and water as it does between water and cardboard. This is because cardboard is made up of paper.
